KLARÄLVEN--THE VALLEY--FINNSKOGEN--WILDLIFE--NATUR--SIGHTS

The Klarälven river has its roots in the province of Härjedalen in Sweden in Rogen, a lake near the norwegian border. This lake connects with another lake, Femunden, in Norway and from there it becomes the Trysil river. Returning into Sweden at the village of Långflon it finally becomes Klarälven. From Femunden down to Karlstad the river stretches 500 km where of 270 km is from Långflon to Karlstad. The river winds further on into Swedens largest lake,Vänern and from there the water flows into Göta Kanal and on to Gothenburg.

The valley of Klarälven is a well known area. Pilgrims traveled here on their way to Olof mass which was on the 29th of july in Nidaros, Norway (now Trondheim). For 500 years (1050 to 1550) the pilgrims travelled here in numbers of up to 30,000 a year. Olav, a norwegian king , christened many norwegians and swedish people. He was canonized soon after his death in 1030. More information about this is available at Northern Värmlands Fishing and Hunting Museum in Ransby. There you can also see the 40 meter long linen tapestry,"Pilgrims tapeten". Made by women from the area whom started the project in september 1995 and finished it in time for the 1000 yr celebration of Trondheim in the spring of 1997.
Sights /ruins from the pilgrims in northern Värmland:Ekshärad church has a christening font and two embroideries dating back to the 1200´s. Norra Ny church in Stöllet has a wooden sculpture of Olav (1200´s), soap-stone christening font (1200´s) and a procession crucifix from the 1300´s. Dalby church has sculptures of Maria (1300´s).
Värmlands highest mountain is Granberget (701 m ) is north of Sysslebäck. Branäs mountain (567m).
Summer and winter turism and the wood industry are one of the largest sources of employment here in Klarälven. Finnskogen (the forest of the Finns) is an area west of northern Klarälven crossing into the Norway. These forests were populated in the 1600´s by people from Finland. The swedish king had promised free land and tax reliefs if they settled there.
The many "smoke houses" left in the area are well worth visiting. More information is available at the turist agencys and at Finnkulturcentrum in Torsby.


Northern Värmland has a very diversified flora and fauna. You can pick blueberries, raspberries, cloudberries , lingonberries and mushrooms. The water in the streams is fresh and drinkable. Wonderful hiking trails are found also. Maps are available at the turist agencies. Buy a fishing license and map and travel around to the many lakes and brooks in the area where you can catch salmon trout, alpine char, river trout, pike and perch. Klarälven has great grayling waters.
If you´re lucky you´ll see moose, deer, bear, wolf, lynx ,beaver and wolverine. The birdlife includes many species of owls, falcons, hawks and eagles. Early summer one can often see cranes on the fields.

LAW OF PUBLIC ACCESS to the nature

In Sweden we have what we call "law of public access ".This gives all people who are out enjoying nature certain rights but also responsibilities towards other people, animals and nature itself. One of the terms of our contract is that you must be well aquainted with this law and abide by it.

FISHING IN THE KLARÄLVEN RIVER

Klarälven is known for its fine grayling fishing. The season is from the last week in june to the beginning of september. They like to dwell near the sandbanks and fly- fishing is best with flies in soft natural colors. Casting rod and lure. Spinners in different colors
(copper,brass,black). Plugs are also good to use.
When choosing your lure/spinner think opposite in this river than you would otherwise in other waters. In clear/fine weather use light shiny lures and night/dark weather use dark lures.
The sandy bottom makes the lures reflect differently.
Worms are easily found with the shovel in the tufts of grass. Fishing license is obligatory when you bring along any kind of fishing tackle. The price for a license per raft is between 100 - 150 swedish kr per 3 day tour. (2004). It includes all people on the raft (but not the whole stretch of your trip).

ACKTJÄRN CABIN Our guesbook tells stories of people from all over that have found this paradise. From parking there is a 500 meter walk to the cabin. It lies totally private and there is no other cabins by the lake - except the lakecabin. There´s a boat and canoe. The cabin is very moderate and has no modern standard like running water or toilet. You get water from a spring nearby or from us. Outhouse = toilet. Bathing in the lake. 2 rooms, 1st room is kitchen with open stove, kitchentable and chairs and 1 roofbed (2 beds). 2nd room has 1 roofbed double (4 beds). Gas stove and fridge.
The price does not include bedlinnen (sheets), cleaning or gas.

ACKTJÄRN LAKE-CABIN ON A RAFT: From parking there is a 500 meter walk to the lake-cabin. It lies by Acktjärn cabin. Canoe & boat chared with acktjärn cabin. There´s a boat and canoe. The cabin is very moderate and has no modern standard like running water or toilet. You get water from a spring nearby or from us. Outhouse = toilet. Bathing in the lake. 1 room, with stove, kitchentable and chairs and 1 roofbed (2 beds). Gas stove.
The price does not include bedlinnen (sheets), cleaning or gas. No guaranties that there is no one living at Acktjärn cabin.

STRANNA CABIN: Well visited fishingcabin by Klarälven. Road all the way to the cabin. The cabin lies private, closest to neighbour is about 800 m.
Moderate standard and no modern facilities like running water or toilet. Water you get from us, and your toilet is a nearby outhouse.
One big room with wooden stove. Gasfridge. 4 beds and 1 extra bed.
Price does not include bed linnen like sheets, cleaning or gas.

CABIN ON BRANÄS MOUNTAIN: At the top of the mountain in Branäs (skicenter) this old cabins history goes back to 1764. At wintertime its only 20 meters from the skitrack-countrystyle and only 500 meter to alpin skiing. Summertime you are in the middle of hikingtracks with wonderful nature. 2 rooms. Open stove. Electrical kitchencabinett with stove and fridge. No running water. Outhouse as toilet. 4 beds. Buy access to Branäs skicenters servicehouse with showers, saunas and washingmachines for only 20 SEK/person/time.
